Mumbai vs Kolkata, 34th Match preview
Losing to open the UAE leg of the IPL 2021 may not have been altogether unlucky for a superstitious side like the Mumbai Indians, but it has left them in a difficult position on the points table, if not a spot down from fourth. With four losses in their first eight games, the defending champions will go to Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Stadium, where they won six of their eight games last season. They’ll be facing the Kolkata Knight Riders, a squad they’ve defeated 22 times in 28 IPL matches, including twice at the same stadium last year.
However, two of their important players, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, remain questionable in terms of fitness and availability. Anmolpreet Singh and Saurabh Tiwary, who was included in the XI against Chennai Super Kings, do not sufficiently cover the hole in any of the categories. Especially Rohit, who has remained KKR’s arch-enemy over the years, regardless matter the team’s players, coaches, or venues. The Eoin Morgan-led side will face a tougher test than they did against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on Monday, as they have only won one of their last 12 matches against the Mumbai Indians in the last five years.
What do you think will happen?
It’ll be intriguing to see if they stick with this strategy against MI, a team that has previously out-planned and out-executed its opponents, or if they create a different XI and surprise them. On Thursday, September 23, 2021, at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, you can expect the average score for other teams to be 155.
Last season, the Mumbai Indians averaged 187. The defending champions have figured out the conditions better than the rest, and it will be interesting to see if they can repeat their success this year.
News from the team:
Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya’s availability is still up in the air. Trent Boult started a day before the game that it rested them in the first game as a ‘precautionary measure’ and that they are recuperating well. With a potent mix of yorkers and short-pitched deliveries, Jasprit Bumrah has kept Andre Russell at bay. He has only surrendered 51 runs in 40 balls against the West Indian and has removed him three times.
Kolkata Knight Riders
Since the previous game, there has been no injury news from the KKR camp. It may tempt KKR to bring in Harbhajan Singh or Kuldeep Yadav if they have enough grounds to change their winning XI.
Were you aware of this?
Despite losing both games against MI last season, KKR’s record in Abu Dhabi was rather impressive, with the team winning 5 of the remaining 6 games. Rohit Sharma is 18 runs short of being the first batter in IPL history to score 1000 runs against aside. He has earned the most Player of the Match accolades in MI-KKR matches with four, followed by Sachin
Tendulkar and Hardik Pandya with three apiece. While MI hasn’t won their season opener since 2013, they have won their second match of the season in five of the last six seasons, with four victories coming against KKR.
